Why Pour-Over?
Pour-over is one of the most rewarding ways to brew coffee at home. It gives you full control over every variable — water temperature, pour rate, and bloom time — resulting in a clean, nuanced cup that highlights the best qualities of a great single-origin coffee.
What You'll Need
- A pour-over dripper (Hario V60, Chemex, or Kalita Wave)
- Paper filters
- Freshly ground coffee (medium-fine grind)
- A gooseneck kettle
- A kitchen scale
- Water heated to 200°F (93°C)
The Ratio
Start with a 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio. For a 12 oz cup, use 22g of coffee and 330g of water.
Step-by-Step Brew Guide
- Rinse your filter. Place the filter in your dripper and rinse with hot water to remove any papery taste. Discard the rinse water.
- Add your coffee. Add your freshly ground coffee and give the dripper a gentle shake to level the bed.
- The bloom pour. Start your timer and pour about 50g of water in slow, circular motions over the grounds. Wait 30–45 seconds. This releases CO₂ and primes the grounds for an even extraction.
- Continue pouring. Pour the remaining water in slow, steady spirals from the center outward. Aim to finish all pours by 2:30.
- Drain and enjoy. Total brew time should be 3:00–3:30. Remove the dripper and enjoy your cup.

Tips for a Better Cup
- Always use freshly roasted, freshly ground coffee.
- Grind just before brewing for maximum freshness.
- Keep your water temperature consistent — too hot and you'll over-extract; too cool and you'll under-extract.
- Experiment with grind size to dial in your preferred flavor.
